Atlas rainwater harvesting

Cost-effective rainwater harvesting, made simple.

Given the unpredictability of the ‘Great British weather’, it seems almost ironic that solar power is very much in the news, yet rainwater harvesting seldom gets a mention.

Rainwater harvesting is the process by which rain water that falls onto a roof is stored and reused. The system can be retro fitted to virtually any property that has a roof, from domestic households to larger buildings such as supermarkets, schools and universities, hospitals and commercial properties etc.

There are the obvious environmental benefits and savings associated with effectively collecting and recycling rainwater, in addition, rainwater is very soft and free of chemicals, which is significantly preferable for appliances.

How does it work?

Initially, a roof catchment system collects any rainwater that falls onto a roof. A first flush of rainwater is run to clean the surface of the roof of debris.

A system of gutters and pipes, sufficiently inclined to avoid standing water, then transfers the rainwater through filters to a rain harvesting tank or tanks that are sized to store up to 18 months. The tank size is determined by the postcode and average annual rainfall.

The storage tanks are covered to prevent insects getting in and to reduce evaporation losses, contamination and algal growth. The stored water is piped back into the building through a series of filters and ultraviolet light, to be used as required.

While the water cannot be drunk, as mentioned above, rainwater is naturally pure, which eliminates the need for any water softening systems.
